You're just using what you've got and that whole dirty sound is like kind of cool. The meaning of 'Dirtstyle' means either your fader's static-y or the records are static-y. Sometimes that raw effect is so entertaining 'cause it's just so like 'Man, he's hardcore, y'know he's on this sound that's all CCHHRRRRRRRRR.' It's kind of like, that whole raw we call it Dirtstyle. IGNM: Do like it when it gets all fried chickeny? Q-Bert: Yeah, yeah. ![]() It's still cool 'cause there's parts of the records that you use and then some parts are still cool 'cause you never use it, so the rest of the record is okay. I've been using this one record, it's like one of the Dirtstyle records, I've been using it for a mad long time. IGNM: How many records do you burn through in a month? Q-Bert: Wow. And they didn't know why the sales were so huge all of a sudden and growing everyday because they didn't know about scratching until they brought us there for the demonstration. All these 60 year old guys who made the needle when the company first started were like 'Wow! I never knew it was used for this stuff.' It was incredible. And all the representatives of Shure from around the world, from Brazil to all over the US and everywhere came there and saw us scratch, 'cause they'd never seen scratching before in their whole life. They were wondering why this needle was selling so much, so they brought us to the Chicago, to the Shure Company. What's funny is that their needle department blew up after they sponsored us. They give us everything from microphones to whatever. They just send us stuff and we tell them what's good and what's not. We're sponsored by Shure, for the last two years now. IGNM: Has Shure had you come in and do needle testing for them yet? Q-Bert: Naw. IGNM: Is that using it every day? Q-Bert: Pretty much everyday, yeah. I've actually had this one needle for 2 years that still works. Not purposely but for some reason they made this really durable needle. I guess they didn't mean to, but they made them for hardcore scratching. IGNM: Even with your patented sideways scratch and you're power-surge double-handed blaze? Q-Bert: Yeah. IGNM: How many needles do you wreck a month? Q-Bert: Actually the needles we use are M447's by Shure and it takes about a year to really mess one up 'cause they're pretty durable. ![]() This one tastes like a good cookie that you would just pick up and eat. They don't taste like all those nasty other kind of energy bars. Q-Bert: AOh man! They're brand new and they have 151 enzymes and nutrients and minerals and what not. IGNM: What's the best Power Bar flavor? - Spence D. That kind of juices me up for a good scratch session. IGNM: What kind of food inspires your scratching? Q-Bert: I like to eat Power Bars and stuff like that which has a lot of vitamins. Like I was cooking the other day and I just walked over to where I have turntables next to the sink. I just bought a house and I wanted to have a set-up in each room so if I felt like scratching I could. IGNM: Do you have turntables all over the house, y'know by the bed, in the bathroom, so you can scratch whenever the need arises? Q-Bert: Actually I do, but not in the bathroom. Usually at night time 'cause I like the atmosphere of the quiet evenings. It's kind of like whenever I feel like it. IGNM: Speaking of scratching one's ass off, how many hours a day do you flex on the tables? Do you get up and burn wax from 9-to-5 or is it more of a 'whenever the urge arises' kind of regimen? Q-Bert: I basically do it when I feel like it. Just two copies of whatever scratch album and you could be on a desert island with those two records forever, scratching your ass off all day. are just a straight up tool that has everything on there on one record. IGNM: So that's a good place for both novices and pros alike to start? Q-Bert: Definitely, for both. That's that whole Dirtstyle line or any other scratch records that are out there like Super Def Breaks, there's uh the Hamster Breaks. Records that are designed specifically for scratching. IGNM: So you would suggest going out and buying actual break albums as opposed to snatching up classic breaks like AC/DC, Black Sabbath, James Brown, or something. Let's see, whew.Toasted Marshmallow Feet Breaks and.that's a tough one. ![]() The second one would be Black Market Snuff breaks.no, no, that one would be third. I'd pick Dirtstyle Deluxe Shampoo for the first one. IGN Music: What would be your Top 5 records to scratch, y'know the records that a beginning DJ definitely needs to have stored in the crates? Q-Bert: It would have to be one of the Dirtstyle records.
